The arm heard round the world….or at least by Paul Craig, at UFC 263, where we were all witness to the once-again dangerous and beautiful guard work of Scotsman and now BJJ Black Belt, Paul Craig. (Congrats if you see this brother!)

I’ll leave most of what I want to say in the breakdown, but there is a very BJJ minded train of thought where the underhook is king off your back, while overhooks are somehow trivial. Personally, if I have a student with a dangerous guard I’m likely working on threats from the much more controlling overhook. There you ‘rifle’ the glove to the armpit, halt momentum, and STILL take the back, which is where I think the presumption of underhook only may have begun.
